One interesting handicraft is Tekatan or Tuji Timbul (Raised Embroidery) the traditional art of gold and silver embroidery which originated in Perak.  It is said to have originated from Indian and Chinese influence.

This skillful art, mainly carried out by Malay women involves the "looming" of sparkling gold and silver thread onto attractive pieces of velvet using only their hands.

Traditional designs are used to form the motifs on the bed furnishings for the members of the royal families, but today, Tekatan is also popular amongst the ordinary people as bridal fans, shoes and cushions.

It is also used to decorate the "pelamin" (bridal stand) at Malay weddings.

"Tekat" tradition states that the embroiderer's hands should be washed in salt water before starting to weave to ensure the complete dryness of the hands while working.

This form of creative craft can be kept for up to 200 years, and is a gift certainly worth treasuring.
