Colourful, Historic Past

From historical records, the first person to discover Hulu Perak was Tun Saban, the son of  Tun Perak, the Bendahara of Malacca in the early 16th century.

When Malacca fell to the Portuguese, Tun Saban fled to Patani and later settled in Belum, Hulu Perak.  Here, he was to become the leader to the settlers of Belum.

In the 19th century, Reman invaded Hulu Perak.  But in 1902, it was destroyed by the Siamese who became the new master.

By an agreement between the Siamese and the British in 1902, the Siamese handed over Kedah, Perlis, Kelantan and Terengganu including Hulu Perak to the British.

Hulu Perak is the largest district in Perak, covering 656,300 hectares which constitutes 31.2% of the state of Perak.  From this, 446,000 hectares is designated as permanent forest reserve.

The total population is approximately 93,000 people.

The district is located in the northern part of Perak, bordering Thailand in the north, Kedah in the west, Kelantan in the east and Kuala Kangsar in the south.

It consists of two sub-districts namely Pengkalan Hulu and Lenggong.
